When search engines decide what website gets the top spot and who follows, they look at several factors. One of the factors which plays a dominate role in search engine results is the number of links you have coming into your site. The best kind of links, the ones with the highest value are the one-way links. When you have hundreds of other relevant websites linking to yours, well that’s a sure way to get to the top of the page rankings quickly.

Here’s how to get more one-way links.

#1 Understand that one-way links are links to your site that are not reciprocated. For example, a reciprocated link is where you link to a friend’s site and they link back to you. This is fine and will help your SEO however it doesn’t hold as much weight as a one-way link.

#2 Create and publish valuable content on your site. People naturally link to quality content.

#3 Submit your website to directories and list them in the proper category.

#4 Article marketing. Submit articles to article directories and be sure to include links to your site. When people publish your articles on their site, they must keep the links in tact.

#5 Publish articles on your site and invite other sites to publish them on their sites, as long as they give you credit for the article and link to you.

#6 Post comments on relevant blogs. Many blogs allow your identity to be a link to your website. Use it!

#7 In the same vein, post comments on relevant forums and place your link in your signature.

#8 Submit your site to relevant directories.

#9 Give away free ebooks, reports and other valuable content that links to your site.

#10 Get listed in business directories.

#11 Write a press release and submit them to news release sites.

#12 Become a guest blogger or columnist on a relevant site with the condition that you can link back to your site.

#13 Host a contest or giveaway with a great prize. People love to enter contests and get something for free and other website owners will enjoy telling their audience about the giveaway. Make it something good, like a Kindle or laptop and you’ll have everyone and their brother linking to you.

#14 Participate in social networking. Twitter, Facebook and other social networking sites are great for generating links to your site.

#15 Go viral. Create an entertaining video, audio or other content and make it available on your site. Think about how quickly people spread the word when they see a good video and how many incoming links you can generate.

When it comes to generating one-way links there are many ways to go about it. Begin with good solid content on your website and branch out from there. Brainstorm the possibilities. It’s fun and you may generate enough one-way links to shoot to the top of the page results.

Here’s a simple comparison to help you differentiate between the two.

Webcasting is similar to traditional broadcasting in some ways. Basically, it’s a video recording of you or others on the net. You can have a news webcast or an interactive one where you hold an online class and participants can view you on video.

Podcasting is similar to traditional radio in some ways. As a podcaster you can have an internet radio show where you invite people on to interview or simply record your thoughts on audio and share with your audience.

Both can be a great method of publicity and interaction on your website. More than ever people are looking to connect on the internet, and both a podcast and webcast can help them do that.

It’s also great news as far as search engine results for your business are concerned. A webcast and podcast may mean more repeat visitors, which is a positive sign for the search engines. If you then repurpose your content by adding it in text form to your webpages, you’ll gain additional SEO points.

So how do you choose between the two?

The decision is ultimately yours but it helps to think things through a little before starting. Ask yourself a few questions:

Do I like the idea of appearing on video regularly? Or does that mean more work for me – i.e. looking presentable, getting your hair done, honing in your presentation style, etc.?

Is an audio recording easier or more within my comfort zone?

Do I have a good speaking voice?

Do I have the presence to hold a viewer's attention on video?

What is my end goal with this?

Will my target market respond better to video or audio? Note: it may be easier for some people to listen to an audio then it is to sit and watch a video.

Whether you choose one option or the other or both, podcasts and webcasts are great additions to any online business. It may also be worth noting that it is beneficial in may ways for you to produce a text version of either the podcast or webcast. You’ll always have the visitors who prefer to read and this option will not alienate anyone. It’s also a great plus for your search engine rankings.
