As this social networking site grows, the folks at Twitter continue to add useful features to their site to make it more efficient, useful and enjoyable. One such feature is the Twitter Search Engine.
The Twitter Search Engine is designed to make it easier for people to sift through the masses of information, and Tweets, to find topics and posts they’re interested in. There are essentially two ways to search on Twitter. You can use their basic search and search by keyword or you can take advantage of their advanced search and fine-tune your search results.
Basic Search
To use Twitter’s basic search all you need to do is to sign into your account. On the home page, in the far right column, you’ll see a search bar about halfway down. It’s right above the Trending Topics for the day. Enter your keywords, click the icon and your results show up to the left.
Now you can also scroll to the very bottom of the page and you’ll see Twitter Home, About Twitter and so on. You’ll also see “Search.” If you click on this, you’ll be taken to a search page that works exactly as we’ve described above – enter your keyword and view your results.
Your search results are displayed chronologically, most recently posted first, and they include all Tweets, not just those from the people you follow. This is a useful tool not only because it enables you to hone in on a topic but also because it may introduce you to others you want to follow.
Advanced Twitter Search
The Advanced Twitter Search is accessed by clicking on the “Search” button at the very bottom of your page. You’ll be taken to a search page where you’ll see a search bar. You’ll also see an advanced search option. Click that and you’ll be able to specify your search by multiple words.
For example, if you want to search by “writing” and “marketing” or sent from a person or sent to a person or even by hashtag. You can search by location, date and whether or not the Tweet contains a link.
Again, the results appear chronologically and are not limited but include all tweets from all twitterers.
A Useful Twist.
If you know exactly how you want to search, you can use the basic search tool, meaning you don’t have to click to the advanced tool, which takes you to a separate page, and search by specific operators. For example, containing the exact phrase "writing copy" or sent to person "copywriter".
And if you find you’re searching Twitter often, you can install Twitter Search on your toolbar.
Twitter Search is a great tool for sifting through the thousands of Tweets posted every minute. You can find quality people to follow and glean wonderful information with the click of a button.
